A Most Important Story.

This is the most important time of the year.
We are coming into the time
when we are called to remember
the saving acts of God in Jesus Christ.

I am fortunate
that I am also called to remember
my own genetic heritage,
that we were once slaves in Egypt,
but with an outstretched arm and a mighty hand
our own God brought out of slavery
and into freedom.

It is for freedom that Christ has set you free.
Full stop.

And our own God
tread the winepress alone.
God sent a son
to redeem a slave,
and brought many sons to God.

Stories matter.
And the story of the next week
has inspired
more art, literature,
and music
than any other in human history.
It really is the greatest story ever told.

This story makes you who you are.
You are a living expression of this story.

I say this every year,
but don't rush to Easter.
You need to wave your palms
and follow Jesus
on the donkey.
You need to listen to the whispers
as the betrayer plots
and gets his thirty pieces.
You need to follow Jesus
into the upper room
and feel the water on your feet.
You need to go to dark Gethsemane
and hear the sighs and see the kiss.
You need to follow Jesus into the court of Pilate,
and follow Jesus through the city
and see the trail of blood.
You need to wipe his face
and look at the image.
You need to see him
hanging on the cross
and watch them lay him in the tomb.

Do not miss the story.
This is where we came from
and why what we do matters.

Lord Jesus Christ,
you stretched out your arms of love
on the hard wood of the cross
that everyone might come
within the reach of your saving embrace:
so clothe us in your Holy Spirit
that we reaching forth our hands in love,
may bring those who do not know you
to the knowledge and love of you,
for the honor of your name. Amen.
