One of the funniest moments
in a Monty Python film
is from the Life of Brian.
For full disclosure,
I couldn't watch the whole thing.

There is a group of people
and they are on the last row
of the Sermon on the Mount.
People are talking,
and others are trying to hear what Jesus is saying.
One person pokes someone and asks:
"What did he say?"
His friend replies,
"Blessed are the CHEESE-makers!"

you attract a crowd.
I've experienced two viral events since Belonging House started.
And you soon receive feedback
and discover
although folks are attracted to the activity,
they really have no idea what you are talking about.

People in the Multitude
are the casual persons who pass by and
stop to see what all the fuss is about.
There is no commitment.
They are the ones who are given a book,
and may or may not read it.
They are the ones who saw you online,
or heard about you from a friend.
They are the ones who mispronounce your name
and think you have a "messiah-complex."

Jesus never sent the multitudes away.
The multitude is a good thing,
because out of the crowd
comes the curious.
And out of the curious
comes the committed.

Many folks in the arts and creative professions
focus on the multitude.
This is the email blast,
and the spam.
This is the commercial that interrupts
your favorite movie right at the good part,
and the junk mail in the post.
Capturing the multitude
not a good return on your investment.

In Belonging House
the multitude is the outward face of our community,
and these are largely men and women
who enjoy my teaching, and books,
casually glance at something I posted online,
and our online presence.
They are not subscribers,
and they may never become part of our community.
If you subscribe to this email,
you are not the multitude.
And I am grateful.

Jesus did not put his trust in the crowd.
The same people who thought he said
"blessed are the cheesemakers,"
eventually cried "Crucify."
